Do-over. That’s the verdict on repairing the ornate, Victorian cupola atop the Nodaway County Courthouse, which was painstakingly fabricated to replicate the 130-year-old original only a year ago, and which sustained severe damage in last month’s hail and wind storm.
The Nodaway County Commission confirmed Friday that the cupola is so badly damaged that it will have to be removed, placed on a truck and shipped back to the manufacturer, Campbellsville Industries in Kentucky, for repairs.
North District Commissioner Robert Westfall said the all-metal structure, which suffered no apparent structural damage, will likely remain in place until next spring in order to avoid the onset of bad weather and to soften the blow for downtown business owners, who have persevered through a series of street closings for more than a year.
A major fire, a building collapse just north of the square and paving and cement work associated with the downtown streetscape project have made barricades along Main Street an almost constant fixture downtown for months.
“It just seemed that (waiting for spring) would be the right thing to do,” Westfall said. “We think maybe there have been enough street closings downtown for a while.”
Removing the cupola will involve closing Main Street in front of the courthouse for a day or two to accommodate a large crane. A similar crane was used Friday to life a Lawhon Construction team to the top of the courthouse, where they took pictures and assessed the damage.
